Historical Note

The Minnesota Military Academy was founded in 1956 by Major General Joseph E. Nelson, the Adjutant General of Minnesota from 1949 – 1960, to instruct and train qualified enlisted men and warrant officers who wanted a career as an officer in the Minnesota National Guard. Early class and training sessions were divided into three different phases and the course work covered in these sessions was meant to prepare the cadets for the practical experience of leading enlisted members of the military. The name of the Minnesota Military Academy was changed in the mid-2000s to the 175th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) but with the same goals of preparing enlisted men and warrant officers to become an officer.
