Biography

Eugene Carl “Gene” Markman was born on 16 December 1934 the second son and child of Paul Ludwig Carl Markman and Rose Lena Struchen in Worthington, Nobles County, Minnesota. Eugene lived in Worthington, Nobles County, Minnesota, attending Worthington High School, graduating 28 May 1952. Eugene enlisted in the United States Army in 1954 with Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon discharge from the Army, Eugene attended Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota studying Sales and General Business. On 24 May 1958 Eugene Markman married Elizabeth Fern Kane in Madison Lake, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Throughout his working career, Eugene was employed in various sales positions. His first job after the Army was Appliance Salesman at Montgomery Ward and Company in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. In 1959 following their marriage and move to Rochester, Minnesota Eugene is listed in the Polk’s Rochester City Directory (page 272) as a deliveryman for Gopher Welding Supply. Eugene would continue employment in sales at Fleischmann’s Foods, Singer Sewing Machines, Knights of Columbus Life Insurance, auto and truck parts, welding supplies, chicken processing equipment and farm seeds to name a few. During his retirement years Eugene drove school buses, motor coaches and handicap/medical vans. In the biography for his 25th high school class reunion in 1977, Gene Eugene Markman Class of 1952 Elizabeth and Eugene Markman 2018 writes, “I spent fifteen years in wholesale food [10 years at Fleischmann’s Foods], four years in retail sales and management [Singer Sewing Machines] and and six years in the life insurance business[Knights of Columbus Insurance]…[returning] to the wholesale business in November of 1976.” Eugene died at age 88 years on 8 March 2023 in Waite Park, Stearns County, Minnesota, where he was living.
