Biographical / Historical
Oliver Jeremiah Quane was born in Mankato, Minnesota on December 21,1979 and was educated at Mankato High School. He was a reporter for several newspapers and editor of the Brown County Journal, New Ulm Review, St. Peter Herald, and several other papers. He served in the Spanish-American War as an enlisted man in the 14th Minnesota Infantry. After the war, he was commissioned captain in the Minnesota National Guard and promoted to major in command of the 2nd Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, whose service along the Mexican border is described in his diary. He mustered out after being promoted to lieutenant colonel but reenlisted with American entry into World War I, during which he commanded various anti-aircraft machine gun battalions and participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. After the war, he served as a special duty instructor of musketry and courts martial as a judge advocate in the Officers Reserve Corps, made a failed run for the 1920 Democratic nomination for governor, and returned to editing until his health failed before his death in December 1936.
